Synopsis
Growing up, Lara always dreamed of leaving Nantucket to become a writer. Now that she's a bestselling novelist living in New York City, she realizes that success isn't what she thought it would be. Confused, and with a harrowing case of writer's block, Lara misses the island way of life more than ever. But going back to Nantucket out of the blue isn't so easy, as a deep rift with her childhood best friend, Isabelle, has kept the two from speaking for years.

When her mother is laid off from her job and becomes depressed, Lara reluctantly comes home, leaving a failed relationship and hopefully her other troubles behind. But facing her estranged best friend is harder than she expects. And falling for Isabelle's brother, Sebastian--who was also Lara's teenage crush--only complicates things. Lara soon realizes that she must remedy the mistakes of her past in order to find true happiness.

My Thoughts
Surfside Sisters focuses on best friends Lara and Isabelle who have been friends forever, Isabelle has been the one with a cushy life and no worries while Lara has always had to work hard for the things she wants. When Lara was a teenager she fell hard for Sebastian, Isabelle’s brother but never acted on it since she valued her friendship like nothing else. So she denied her feelings and possibly lost out on the love of her life just so she wouldn’t make Isabelle mad.

As time goes on both Lara and Isabelle fall in and out of relationships but Sebastian was always the love of Lara’s life. They flirted but she never knew if his feelings were mutual or just simply flirting. Both friends wanted to be writers and after Lara’s father passed away she dropped out of school to help her mom, while Isabelle continued college. With a little luck Lara’s writing career takes off and she becomes successful. She wants to share this news with Isabelle but even after years of not talking Lara still thinks of them as friends while Isabelle doesn't want anything to do with her. She has moved on with Lara’s ex and is simply jealous that her career hasn't taken off like Lara’s.

While I liked this beachy read there were parts I didn't like. I didn't like how Lara kept trying to hang on to a friendship that was done by all accounts. I didn't like how it seemed Lara was the only one who still wanted to be friends, it was as if she was begging Isabelle to be friends with her. Isabelle seemed like a bully at times just playing with Lara’s emotions when she wanted to. She knew how Lara felt about her brother yet basically always told her he was off limits like she controlled Lara. I think a true friend would want you to be happy no matter what even if that meant becoming involved with your brother.

The romance with Lara and Sebastian was something alright. I liked the push and pull of it all. Their timing was never right, but all relationships aren't always instant right? The fact that it took them forever to get together was a great move, we saw them grow and come into their own which to me meant when they finally got together it was the perfect time. Even the friendship of Lara and Isabelle came together at the end, which I thought was good also. Sometimes friendships don't always last but the ones that do endure over time are ones that can make the long haul. Surfside Sisters is the perfect beach read one that gives us a wonderful story about love and friendships that capture the perfect essence of Nantucket Summers.

Synopsis
A few years after losing her beloved husband, Alison is doing something she never thought she would do again: getting married. While placing the finishing touches on her summer nuptials, Alison is anxious to introduce her fiancé, David, to her grown daughters: Felicity, a worried married mother of two, and Jane, also married but focused on her career. The sisters have a somewhat distant relationship and Alison hopes that the wedding and the weeks leading up to the ceremony will give the siblings a chance to reconnect, as well as meet and get to know David’s grown children.

As the summer progresses, it is anything but smooth sailing. Felicity stumbles upon a terrible secret that could shatter her carefully cultivated world. Jane finds herself under the spell of her soon-to-be stepbrother, Ethan, who is as charming as he is mysterious. And even Alison is surprised (and slightly alarmed) by her new blended family. Revelations, intrigue, resentments—as the Big Day approaches, will the promise of bliss be a bust?

My Thoughts
In A Nantucket Wedding we met Alison who is happily in love and is planning her upcoming wedding to David, so all she wants is to get both sides of their families together as much as possible before their wedding how that is easier said than done. Alison has two daughters and each one is different as night and day. Jane is a lawyer and married with no kids and by the books and never has done anything out of sorts, Felicity is the more laid back one who is married with kids but is fearing that something is up with her husband. Now David has a daughter is plain spoiled in my opinion and is being simply difficult towards Alison and her daughters, and he also has a son who is a flat out flirt who flirts with both of Alison’s daughters despite the fact he isn’t divorced himself.

While I found some flaws with parts of the story such as Felicity’s storyline with her husband who I found to be an ass I wish she had more of a backbone and stood up for herself more. I felt like when it was useful to him that’s when he wanted to be involved with Felicity’s family. Not to mention the storyline with Jane and David’s son which I never bought from the get-go but was glad when it didn’t go where I thought it might.

However, overall I did enjoy this beach read, which this is perfect for by the way. I did like the family aspect of this read and the story of Alison and David. I liked that David stood up for Alison when his daughter was being mean and spiteful towards Alison. I loved how the more time both families spent together they slowly but surely became a great blended family, and I also liked how this felt so real. They didn’t come together as an insta-family but like reality, they had their troubles and bumps but in the end, they meshed together quite well. This was an enjoyable read one that will be perfect for the warmer months ahead so definitely keep this one on your radar.

Review: The Island House by Nancy Thayer

The Island House by Nancy Thayer

Rating: 3/5

Synopsis
The charms of Nantucket tempt a woman to leave her established life in Kansas City—but with a piece of her heart, and a love interest, in each world, she discovers she must look within to choose the right path.

Every summer since college, twenty-nine-year-old Courtney has traded the familiarity of the Midwest for the allure of Nantucket. Now an established university professor in Kansas City, she finds herself caught between two lifestyles and two very different men. She chooses Nantucket and the glamorous life she associates with it, unaware that the summer will take an unexpected turn, and she will have to let her heart decide what it truly wants.

My Thoughts
In the Island House, we meet Courtney who gets swept up in the Nantucket life when her college roommate invites her to spend the summers with her and her family. She falls in love with the town and the family who takes her in as their own and soon she falls for their son. Summers come and go but Courtney never reveals her true feelings scared that she will lose her “summer family” if it doesn’t work out. We follow Courtney as she grows from a young girl to a woman and also see a glimpse of her life back home in Kansas with her friend Monty who has always been in love with her.

The novel mainly focuses on her recent summer in Nantucket when she is determined to find out where exactly her relationship stands…if there is anything there at all. We also meet her “Nantucket family” and while they seem perfect from the outside there are troubles they are trying to overcome. They are dealing with their oldest son’s manic depression and the toll it takes everyone. While I liked when they focused on the romance part I don’t get the whole bringing in Monty part. I mean there isn’t a real look on them as anything more than friends, so trying to make it seem as if he has a chance to steal her away is something I don’t buy. You don’t feel compelled to root for them as a couple.

All in all even though it’s a lot going on and tons of characters what I really enjoyed was when Courtney decided to go for broke. She took things by the horns and made her voice be heard. She knew what she wanted and went for it. Her doing that just showed how much she evolved and make me really root for her. While there are parts I felt dragged there all others that shined and that’s what makes this read enjoyable.

Synopsis
Sensible thirty-six-year-old Sophie Anderson has always known what to do. She knows her role in life: supportive wife of a successful architect and calm, capable mother of two. But on a warm summer night, as the house grows quiet around her and her children fall asleep, she wonders what’s missing from her life. When her husband echoes that lonely question, announcing that he’s leaving her for another woman, Sophie realizes she has no idea what’s next. Impulsively renting a guest cottage on Nantucket from her friend Susie Swenson, Sophie rounds up her kids, Jonah and Lacey, and leaves Boston for a quiet family vacation, minus one.

Also minus one is Trevor Black, a software entrepreneur who has recently lost his wife. Trevor is the last person to imagine himself, age thirty and on his own, raising a little boy like Leo—smart and sweet, but grappling constantly with his mother’s death, growing more and more closed off. Hoping a quiet summer on the Nantucket coast will help him reconnect with Leo, Trevor rents a guest house on the beautiful island from his friend Ivan Swenson.

Best-laid plans run awry when Sophie and Trevor realize they’ve mistakenly rented the same house. Still, determined to make this a summer their kids will always remember, the two agree to share the Swensons’ Nantucket house. But as the summer unfolds and the families grow close, Sophie and Trevor must ask themselves if the guest cottage is all they want to share.

My Thoughts
Sophie is blown away when her husband tells her he wants a divorce. She has always been a devoted wife and mother but when the news hits her she decides she wants time for herself and her kids, a summer of fun and relaxation for once without thinking of her husband first and their troubles at home. Due to a mix up she finds herself sharing a beach house with Trevor. Trevor whose eccentric wife has just died finds himself at the beach house trying to console his young son and his feelings about his mom. Two different people with two different sets of parenting come together seamlessly. From the start both just to fit together so well that you can’t help but want to see them get together.

I like how we see them deal with each other and their problems instead of sweeping them under the rug. They help each other where the one is weak the other is strong, building the ultimate friendship that is a must in any relationship but of course nothing goes off easy. There are problems they have to deal with, his… how will his son react…hers she still is married and does she want to start something so serious so soon plus she has  issues with the age gap…it’s only like 4 years [GET OVER IT Sophie!]

I have been a huge fan of Nancy Thayer for a while now but I must say this one is my favorites by a long shot. The characters are wonderful, the storyline is amazing and I just felt this was a complete and rich story and I couldn’t ask for anything more. This is a MUST summer read!

Day 17 of 25 Days of Christmas Reviews: An Island Christmas by Nancy Thayer

An Island Christmas by Nancy Thayer

Format: via NetGalley
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Rating: 4/5

Synopsis
As Christmas draws near, Felicia returns to her family’s home on the island to marry her adventurous, rugged boyfriend, Archie. Every detail is picture-perfect for a dream wedding: the snow-dusted streets, twinkling lights in the windows, a gorgeous red and white satin dress. Except a lavish ceremony is not Felicia’s dream at all; it’s what her mother, Jilly, wants. Jilly’s also worried that her daughter’s life with daredevil Archie will be all hiking and skydiving. Wondering if their handsome neighbor Steven Hardy might be a more suitable son-in-law, Jilly embarks on a secret matchmaking campaign for Felicia and the dashing stockbroker.

As the big day approaches and Jilly’s older daughter, Lauren, appears with rambunctious kids in tow, tensions in the household are high. With the family careening toward a Yuletide wedding disaster, an unexpected twist in Nancy Thayer’s heartwarming tale reminds everyone about the true meaning of the season.

My Thoughts
This is another winner from Nancy Thayer this one focuses on a Christmas wedding. Felicia comes home to marry her fiancé in a big wedding which either one wants except her mother Jilly. Felicia is an outdoorsy girl who loves the simple things in life and that doesn’t include an over the top wedding which is starting to put a wedge between her and her fiancé. Her mother Jilly has other plans which include trying to push her new neighbor Steven and Felicia together days before the wedding. Little does Jilly know that Felicia isn’t Steven’s type…at all!

A wedding and Christmas all rolled into one…talk about stress! This read has some great characters and storyline plus it’s very fun and witty. I love that it focuses on family and also on how Felicia tries to figure out what she really wants in life. While at times I found Jilly a little overbearing I know that some people could really relate to a mother like that. As much as she is pushy I know she only comes from a place of love, but at some point she must learn to let go and realize her children knows what is best for them. All in all this is a great quick story of family and love during the holiday season.

Synopsis
When Maggie and Emily meet as girls on the Nantucket beach, they are instant best friends—even though Emily's mother would much prefer she play with the daughters of senators and statesmen than a seamstress's kid like Maggie. But after many golden summers spent building sandcastles and sharing their dreams for the future, Emily and Maggie grow apart. In her twenties, beautiful and spirited Piper worries she'll never amount to more than the glittering wife of a successful husband, while hardworking redheaded Maggie scrimps and saves her pennies, wondering if she'll ever have the luxury of a passionate romance. It seems they have little in common…until Cameron Chadwick appears on the island. A wealthy Midwestern charmer, Cameron takes moonlit walks on the dunes with Maggie and whisks Emily away to New York City for lavish nights on the town. When both women discover they're pregnant, it looks like the end of their already-distant friendship. But as Maggie and Emily struggle to decide what their lives will be, they realize more than ever before how very much they need a friend.

My Thoughts
I had high hopes for this one and sadly it fell a bit flat. As a fan of Nancy Thayer I was expecting one thing and received something else.

This is a story of two friends who have known each other since they were kids, Emily who is rich and summers on the island while Maggie isn’t and is a native of the island. They start off every summer as no time has passed, Emily is and has for a while now have feelings for Maggie’s brother Ben. They both declare their love for one another but as time goes by he realizes he can never give her what she is used to and will never be good enough in her parent’s eyes. During this time she meets Cameron who is everything her parents want her to end up with. While she loves Ben she falls for Cameron’s slick ways she later finds out she’s pregnant. Whose is it? Ben’s or Cameron’s? She decides to tell Cameron it’s his. Little does Emily know what Cameron isn’t who she thought he would be. One night while helping out a friend Maggie meets and falls for Cameron. Yep drama! She later becomes pregnant herself but once she finds out that he is married to Emily she doesn’t say a word. She lives her life and marries an old friend and over time she and Emily become close again. Once she sees Emily’s child she knows who the father is.

This is a story about love and most importantly friendship. While I loved the parts of them as young girls I just couldn’t buy their friendship when they got older. I get that people grow and friendships change but seriously two best friends who could possibly be pregnant by the same man? REALLY? And no one gets mad? Trust me I don’t buy that in the real world. Granted it can happen yet no one questions anything in the book? It’s like the elephant in the room. Yet when everything plays out in the end I just wasn’t really satisfy. I love Nancy Thayer’s books but this one left me with more questions than answers.

Holiday Reads [Review]: A Nantucket Christmas by Nancy Thayer

A Nantucket Christmas by Nancy Thayer
Published: October 29, 2013
Format: E-Arc via NetGalley
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Rating: 3/5

Synopsis
Holidays on this Massachusetts island are nothing short of magical, from the jolly decorations on the Brant Point lighthouse to the much anticipated Christmas Stroll, in which merrymakers promenade through quaint streets adorned with Yuletide cheer. The season’s wonderful traditions are much loved by Nicole Somerset, new to Nantucket and recently married to a handsome former attorney. Their home is already full of enticing scents of pine, baking spices, and homemade pie.
But the warm, festive mood is soon tempered by Nicole’s chilly stepdaughter, Kennedy, who arrives without a hint of holiday spirit. Determined to keep her stepmother at arms’ length—or, better yet, out of the picture altogether—Kennedy schemes to sabotage Nicole’s holiday preparations. Nicole, however, is not about to let anyone or anything tarnish her first Christmas with her new husband.

My Thoughts
I was really excited to read this one since I’m a big fan of Nancy Thayer’s summer reads that mainly focus in Nantucket. This story is about Kennedy who is going back home for the holidays to visit her dad and stepmom. Kennedy who has a little boy and is expecting again still has hopes, and in my opinion disillusions of her parents getting back together. This seems a little odd seeing how her dad is now happily remarried to Nicole and her mom has a much younger boyfriend. All of this doesn’t stop Kennedy who’s setting a plan in motion on getting her parents back together and knocking Nicole out of the picture.

While I loved Thayer’s description of Nantucket as a winter wonderland, I was kind of disappointed in the plot of the story. Honestly I just saw Kennedy as a very spoiled rich girl who just wanted her way. Although she does come around in the end I just didn’t like her very much.  I mean seriously sometimes I forgot how old she was because you thought she was a child with the way she was acting.

I had high hopes for this read, but I just felt it fell flat. All in all it was just an ok read. Nothing fab but I’ve read way worse before.

 Summary via Goodreads
Charming ladies’ man Rory Randall dies with one last trick up his sleeve: His will includes a calculating clause mandating a summer-long reunion for his daughters, all from different marriages—that is, if they hope to inherit his posh Nantucket house. Relations among the three sisters are sour thanks to long-festering jealousies, resentments, and misunderstandings. Arden, a successful television host in Boston, hasn’t been back to the island since her teenage years, when accusations of serious misbehavior led to her banishment. College professor Meg hopes to use her summer to finish a literary biography and avoid an amorous colleague. And secretive Jenny, an IT specialist, faces troubling questions about her identity while longing for her sisters’ acceptance.

To their surprise, the three young women find their newfound sisterhood easier to trust than the men who show up to complicate their lives. And if that weren’t problematic enough, their mothers descend on the island. When yet another visitor drops by the house with shocking news, the past comes screaming back with a vengeance. Having all the women from his life under his seaside roof—and overseeing the subsequent drama of that perfect storm—Rory Randall might just be enjoying a hearty laugh from above.

My Thoughts
This book has everything I love in a great summer read. It has the beach, family, secrets and love. It all starts with three sisters coming together after their father’s death. In order inherit his beach house they must spend the entire summer together or lose out on everything. While a false accusation when they were young cause two of the sisters growing up not really knowing their father. It causes resentment and hatred between all the sisters and all their mothers.

While each one went into this with the intention of only money, all the sisters end up becoming close and realizing all that they missed out on. They come together themselves and not only restore their relationship between themselves but also with their moms. In restoring their sisterhood they also found more about themselves and each grew as a person like never before.

Just when they thought they had hashed out all their old problems and settled them, they realized dear old dad had one more secret. The secret? Another woman…his mistress, who decides she wants a piece of the action and is, set out to get what she “thinks” she deserves. Talk about drama! Nothing screams beach read then a little drama.

This is my first forte regarding a book by Nancy Thayer and I think she’s so fabulous! Why have I waited so long??!! She’s now my new [to me] go to author for awesome summer reads. You can almost feel the Nantucket sun on your face and feel the sand between your toes. I highly enjoyed this book and I know you will too.
