Excerpt from THE ESCAPE by Hannah Jayne:
“Hello?” she called out. “This is Avery Templeton with Search Team Five. Hello?”
The silence was complete, except for the steady thump of Avery’s heart. She took a step forward and slid on the loose earth, tumbling forward onto her hands and knees. Rocks tore skin and the knees of her jeans as she slid. When she stopped- eight, ten feet at the most- she was breathing heavily, her mind reeling. She did a quick assessment for damage. Other than the sting on her palms, nothing hurt.
So why was there blood on her hands?
She brought her hands towards her face and grimaced as the streaks of rust-colored blood-congealed, dirt stained-that covered her palms.
She wasn’t bleeding.
This wasn’t her blood.
It was then that she heard the slow gurgle, the sparse intake of breath followed by a low, throaty whisper. “Avery, you have to help me.”
Avery stared at the figure lying in front of her, allowing her eyes to adjust to the dim light.
“Please.”
The word came out in a desperate hiss, and he clasped a muddy, blood-caked hand around her wrist, his grip limp, his fingers trembling.
She gasped. “Fletcher?”

My Thoughts

Okay so this is a very short read 29 pages but I just couldn’t buy into the story. It just felt too rushed and I didn’t believe in the romance. Sorry.

Review: Summer Secrets by Jane Green

Summer Secrets by Jane Green
Published: June 23, 2015
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Format: via BookSparks
Challenges: SRC 2015
Rating: 5/5

Synopsis
June, 1998: At twenty seven, Catherine Coombs, also known as Cat, is struggling. She lives in London, works as a journalist, and parties hard. Her lunchtimes consist of several glasses of wine at the bar downstairs in the office, her evenings much the same, swigging the free booze and eating the free food at a different launch or party every night. When she discovers the identity of the father she never knew she had, it sends her into a spiral. She makes mistakes that cost her the budding friendship of the only women who have ever welcomed her. And nothing is ever the same after that.

June, 2014: Cat has finally come to the end of herself. She no longer drinks. She wants to make amends to those she has hurt. Her quest takes her to Nantucket, to the gorgeous summer community where the women she once called family still live. Despite her sins, will they welcome her again? What Cat doesn’t realize is that these women, her real father’s daughters, have secrets of their own. As the past collides with the present, Cat must confront the darkest things in her own life and uncover the depths of someone’s need for revenge.

My Thoughts
This book is amazing! This book focuses on addiction and how it not only affects your life but those all around you. Summer Secrets has a couple of storylines going on but nothing that’s too much or too confusing.

We meet Cat when she is young and partying and drinking way too much. She meets a nice guy one night and wakes up hungover at his place not knowing what happened and discovers he is a recovering alcoholic. He encourages her to go to meetings and she does but she doesn’t do it for herself but for him. One cannot truly get help unless they want it you can’t make someone do something they don’t want to do especially when they don’t think there is a problem.

We see how Cat’s childhood was growing up with a mom who was depressed and a father who wasn’t really a father. One day a few months after her father’s death her mom confesses he wasn’t her dad but that her father was an American she spent a romantic summer with back home. She thinks this is her chance to truly have a family and sets off to reunite with them in hopes of building a real family. She learns that her father also has a drinking problem and maybe it might be in her genes. She instantly connects to one sister and one night her drinking might have caused the one thing she wants so much to be lost forever. Not until years later while Cat is losing her husband and daughter does she decide she can’t live like this forever. She decides to become sober for herself and while in the process she must make amends with those she hurt the most. She must go back to America and reconnect with her sisters and ask for forgiveness for the hurtful things she did. While she thinks everything is forgiven she soon learns not everything is as is seems. Will she get what she came for or is revenge the ultimate payback?

This story was just so good! I felt so many emotions while reading; I hated then felt compassion for Cat. She was a true addict who loved her drinking more than anything else. But like they say you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves. This is a story of love, forgiveness and surviving. It gives you hope that anyone who has gone through so much in life can change, if you really want to and put all your soul and heart into it.

Mini Review: Cat and Jemima J by Jane Green

Cat and Jemima J by Jane Green
Published: May 5, 2015
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Format: via free Kindle read
Rating: 5/5

Synopsis
From New York Times bestselling author Jane Green comes an original short story featuring Jemima, the main character from Green's beloved novel Jemima J, and Cat, the main character from her upcoming novel Summer Secrets.

My Thoughts
This is a very short story featuring Jemima J and introducing Cat a character in Jane Green’s newest novel Summer Secrets. I love that we see a glimpse of Cat’s life before all the changes in her life and how she met Jemima J. I like how we see how they met but doesn’t give too much away when it comes to Cat’s character in Summer Secrets.

Review: Tiny Little Thing by Beatriz Williams

Tiny Little Thing by Beatriz Williams
Expected Publication: June 23, 2015
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons
Format: via publisher
Rating: 5/5

Synopsis
In the summer of 1966, Christina Hardcastle—“Tiny” to her illustrious family—stands on the brink of a breathtaking future. Of the three Schuyler sisters, she’s the one raised to marry a man destined for leadership, and with her elegance and impeccable style, she presents a perfect camera-ready image in the dawning age of television politics. Together she and her husband, Frank, make the ultimate power couple: intelligent, rich, and impossibly attractive. It seems nothing can stop Frank from rising to national office, and he’s got his sights set on a senate seat in November.

But as the season gets underway at the family estate on Cape Cod, three unwelcome visitors appear in Tiny’s perfect life: her volatile sister Pepper, an envelope containing incriminating photographs, and the intimidating figure of Frank’s cousin Vietnam-war hero Caspian, who knows more about Tiny’s rich inner life than anyone else. As she struggles to maintain the glossy façade on which the Hardcastle family’s ambitions are built, Tiny begins to suspect that Frank is hiding a reckless entanglement of his own…one that may unravel both her own ordered life and her husband’s promising career.

My Thoughts
Simply put I LOVED THIS! I have been a fan of Beatriz Williams ever since I read A Hundred Summers and this new book didn’t disappoint. As a lover of all things 60’s this book had me from the very beginning. This is the story of Christina “Tiny” Hardcastle and we get a glimpse into her life told to us alternating between the years 1964 and 1966. We met her right before she is to marry Frank but falls in love with Caspian weeks before she is to marry. She struggles in wanting to follow her heart or doing what is expected of her. If she marries Frank she is guarantee a life of leisure to a man who is a rising star in political circles or wait for Caspian to come back from war. She is torn but just as she makes up her mind she finds out that Caspian is Frank’s cousin and thinks she was set up.

We soon learn she choose Frank but always wonders if she made the right decision. She believes Frank is constantly cheating on her and the stress of it all is taking its toll. Caspian soon returns and his presence only makes things that much more difficult. She soon discovers her past is about to be exposed and she is being blackmailed. Tiny has always done what others wanted her to do and now all she wants is to finally live a life she wants. Topping it all off she discovers her husband’s secret and as much as it hurts her she thinks maybe this is her way out. I love how Tiny is so much stronger than she gives herself credit for. While many would’ve loved her life she soon discovers that money and a privileged life isn’t something that will truly fulfill her, she wants real love and won’t settle for anything less. I love the alternating stories because I feel that we see the real Tiny and the Tiny that her in-laws have groomed her to be. Most importantly we see how much she has grown in only a matter of years.

Beatriz Williams paints the most interesting characters I have read in ages. She has single handily made me a lover of historical fiction and for that I want to thank her. Tiny Little Thing will keep you captivate from page one and I highly recommend this as the perfect beach read. This is the second book focusing on the Schuyler sisters. The first The Secret Life of Violet Grant is about Vivian and her next novel Along the Infinite Sea features Pepper. I for one can’t wait!

Tanner Aw, shit. I watched Andrea walk into the living room, the normal twitch of her hips absent. No one swayed ass like Andrea, and seeing it gone from her step was answer enough. Our normal whatever-the-fuck-it-was between us had gone further than I intended. No doubt what I’d said had cut her, but shit, it was no different than any other day. My hand tightened on the neck of the bottle. For the life of me, I had no idea what the hell Andrea Walters’s problem was. Honestly. No fucking clue. One minute, sweet and sugary words parted those pouty pink lips of hers. Next second, she was a fire-breathing dragon from hell—a hot, fire-breathing dragon, but still. Her moods flipped more quickly than cups did during a game of flip cup. Maybe it was because she was a redhead? I smirked. She’d always been this way with me, and the most fucked-up think about it, there was a part of me that actually looked forward to whatever was going to come out of her mouth. Twisted as fuck. It was like a game between us, to see who could hit the hardest without lifting a finger. If nothing else, it was damn entertaining—or at least, it had been until now. Now, I wasn’t too sure about it. Those pretty doe eyes of hers had looked suspiciously damp right before she’d looked away, and yeah…that didn’t sit right with me. Kyler shot me a look as he walked past me and grabbed a beer out of the fridge, but I watched Andrea sit on the edge of the couch, her posture unnaturally rigid. Sydney leaned against the arm. “We’re thinking about leaving early in the morning, around six.” My gaze flicked to Andrea, expecting her to make some kind of crack about not getting up that early, but she was abnormally quiet. My spine stiffened. “That should put us at the cabin between nine and ten in the morning, depending on traffic.” Kyler stood beside me as he screwed off the cap. “Then we’ll be heading back the following Monday.” “Sounds good to me.” I didn’t take my eyes off Andrea as she fiddled with a strap on her sandals, slipping them onto her feet. Sydney glanced at me, smiling softly. “You’re definitely off from the fire department?” I nodded. Kyler had mentioned weeks ago about wanting to hit up the cabin before everyone headed back to class, and I’d requested the time off then. Which had meant I’d pulled a lot of doubles, but I hadn’t minded it. Wasn’t too different from the twelve-hour shifts we worked in the first place, and I’d only be there until February of next year, and then I was off to the academy. Not that I was in any hurry to leave the fire department, but being a cop was in my blood. Except I wanted to be a good cop. I’d probably still volunteer at the fire hall once I knew what kind of schedule I was looking at on the force. “It makes sense if we drive up together.” Sydney toyed with a strand of her hair. “Kyler and I can pick you two up.” Andrea had twisted toward Sydney and started to protest the whole idea of taking one car. I zoned out, staring at her as the bottle of beer dangled from the tips of my fingers. Damn…she was a cute girl. Nah, she was more than cute, and it wasn’t like this was the first time I’d noticed that. From the first time I’d seen her at the bar with Sydney, she’d done more than just poke my interest. Hell, anyone with eyes knew she was a very pretty girl. Lush lips. Freckled cheeks and thick, dark eyelashes. Come to think of it, she reminded me of a girl I’d had a crush on in middle school. Hell, couldn’t remember that chick’s name, but she’d had freckles and red hair. I think I used to pull on her braids or some annoying shit like that. My lips tipped up in a small grin as I lifted the bottle to my mouth. Andrea was a motherfucking firecracker, though, not the kind of girl who was easily tamed. Hell, not the kind of girl you even wanted to tame.
