Rating: 4/5

Synopsis
June, 1947. Charleston is poised to celebrate the biggest wedding in high-society history, the joining of two of the oldest families in the city. Except the bride is nowhere to be found…

Unlike the rest of the debs she grew up with, Vada Hadley doesn’t see marrying Justin McLeod as a blessing—she sees it as a life sentence. So when she finds herself one day away from a wedding she doesn’t want, she’s left with no choice but to run away from the future her parents have so carefully planned for her.

In Round O, South Carolina, Vada finds independence in the unexpected friendships she forms at the boarding house where she stays and a quiet yet fulfilling courtship with the local diner owner, Frank Darling. For the first time in her life, she finally feels like she’s where she’s meant to be. But when her dear friend Darby hunts her down, needing help, Vada will have to confront the life she gave up—and decide where her heart truly belongs.

My Thoughts
This book had me from the very beginning. The cover caught my eye but the story drew me in and kept me captivated. The story takes place in the late 40’s which I love since this is a time period that isn’t used that much in the books I read.

The story is about Vada who is rich and who is supposed to marry Justin. Justin is the type of guy who only wants her as a show piece. He doesn’t want her to work or express her emotions much less her opinions on things. Right before she is to wed she gets the courage to leave her family and everything she has ever know in order to live her life as she wants. She wants a life of freedom and most importantly she wants real true love, not a marriage that’s more business than love. She ends up in Round O, a small town in hopes that no one will find her. Her first day she was there she meets the diner own Frank. Frank is instantly taken with her and falls for her at first sight. He knows this is the woman he is meant to be with a marriage. Their courtship is innocent but you can see these two souls were meant to be.

I honestly loved this book! I enjoyed reading the romance between Frank and Vada, it was so innocent and seeing how things were back in the day it kind of opened my eyes to things. The whole feel of the storyline felt really real. Frank is one of those guys I wish there were more of. He is a hopeless romantic and an old soul. He loves with his whole heart even though he was hurt and taken advantage of in the past. The fact that he would do anything for anyone just makes him so loveable. His backstory is one I didn’t see coming and it gave his character so much depth and it kind of broke my heart. While Vada is someone who is so much stronger than anyone would give her credit for. All she wants is a chance to live a life, one that she has a hand in. She wants to love and experience things for herself and not just be a woman who is seen and not heard. She is definitely a woman who is ahead of her time.

This read is like a breath of fresh air. It showed me a time of which I didn’t know that much about and it was awesome. I loved the innocence of the time and how things where back then. While it showed me how much things are different it also showed me how some things are the same. In the end we all want love. We all want that butterfly feeling in the pit of your stomach, loyality and earth-shattering love. Because in the end no matter how different we are love is the one common thing we all have the right to have.

Late to the Game [4]: The Summer I Turned Pretty Trilogy by Jenny Han

Late to the Game is a series I do featuring books that everybody and their mommy have read…except me. The thing is 99% of the time I have these books but they have just been pushed back on my TBR pile. This won’t be a review of sorts seeing how everyone already knows the basics of the story but more of what I felt and how it affected me. I’ve dedicated this feature to try to put a dent in my pile and also to see if they live up to the hype…good and/or bad.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Trilogy by Jenny Han
Publisher: Simon & Schuster BYR
Format: purchased series
Ratings:
The Summer I Turned Pretty: 5/5
It’s Not Summer without You: 4/5
We’ll Always Have Summer: 5/5

Synopsis
Belly has always lived for the summertime because it means all her favorite things: swimming, the beach and the Fisher boys, Conrad and Jeremiah. She has spent every summer with them at Cousins Beach for as long as she can remember. She has always been in love with Conrad and finally, one summer, it seems like he might have feelings for her too. But it turns out, so does Jeremiah.

As the summers go on, Belly has to choose between two brothers who love her as she comes to the realization that she will have to break one of their hearts.

My Thoughts
I’ve heard so many awesome things about this series I knew I had to read it at some point. After reading To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before I knew I had to read it NOW. I read the first one The Summer I Turned Pretty in literally a day. LOVED it! Needless to say I devoured the next two back to back.

This series definitely lived up to the hype. I fell in love with Belly, Jeremiah and Conrad. Ok maybe not so much Conrad. At least not so much in the beginning, I thought he was mean and rude but then after getting into the series I realized the kind of person he was. Just like me. Yeah that’s right I said like ME. I saw myself in him as far as how he always distances himself and his feelings towards other. He doesn’t always show emotions nor does he speak his feels that often. It’s not that he doesn’t want to; he just doesn’t want to get rejected or hurt.

Jenny Han paints the picture of Cousins beach with such realness that I could close my eyes and see it. I could smell the salty air and feel the wind coming off the water. Not only are there wonderful characters but the supporting cast is amazing as well. However what I loved and enjoyed the most was how I got so invested in these characters so fast. Seeing them grow up and dealing with an issue that at times breaks your heart. There is not one of us who can’t identify with the triumphs and tragedies of growing up and trying to find out where and how we fit  into this crazy world. Throw in some romance and heartache you can’t go wrong. This is one read I wished I read earlier however I’m so glad I got to meet and fall in love with them and you should too.

Review: After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid

After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Published: July 1, 2014
Publisher: Washington Square Press
Format: copy via Booksparks
Rating: 5/5

Synopsis
When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.

Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage. These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Lauren’s ideas about monogamy and marriage. She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for?

This is a love story about what happens when the love fades. It’s about staying in love, seizing love, forsaking love, and committing to love with everything you’ve got. And above all, After I Do is the story of a couple caught up in an old game—and searching for a new road to happily ever after.

My Thoughts
**ATTENTION I FOUND A NEW AUTHOR TO OBSESS OVER**
Seriously I love this book and author so much I ordered her previous novel just pages into this novel. Honestly when I read the concept that Lauren and Ryan were going to take a year off of their marriage to figure things out I wasn’t so sure how this would pan out. Okay so I had my theories on how I thought things would work out and trust me it wasn’t positive. The fact that so many things could’ve happened such as falling in love with someone else, I couldn’t see this ending in a good way.

In the very beginning Lauren cant handle things and she logs into Ryan's emails while there she sees Ryan has written drafts of emails and she checks them out. There are emails to Lauren in them he tells her things he felt he could never tell her. While at first she gets mad but eventually she starts to see things from his eyes. She began to realize how they both took things for granted. She realized how he saw her and most importantly how she saw him. She starts writing her own emails at first they are very mean but slowly but surely they turn emotional. She soon stops seeing how he is doing and starts to focus on her own well being.

I loved the journey that Lauren takes. She takes this time to focus on herself and in the process she becomes closer to her family as well. Although this book is about a marriage, bottom line it all boils down to communication, work and effort. Everyone seems to love the ideal of love but love and attraction is the easy thing. Marriage takes work and effort if you don’t put the work in it can all fall to the wayside in a blink of an eye. However at the same time you have to want to put the effort in. If you don’t than there are bigger issues. But sometimes things are definitely worth fighting for. This book shows us that marriage isn’t perfect that sometimes you have to step back and if your love is strong enough nothing can break that bond. This is hands down one of fave reads of the year. It’s funny, witty, emotional and makes you see life and love in all it’s grit and glory. Taylor Jenkins Reid takes you on a ride on that you soon won't forget.

Synopsis
Abbey Ross, who runs her own bakery in Oakland, California, is known for her visually stunning wedding cakes. But lately, Abbey’s own love life has become stale. According to her best friend, Bendrix, Abbey’s not the spontaneous young woman she was when they were teenagers listening to the Cure and creating attention-grabbing graffiti. Of course, her failed relationship with a womanizing art forger might have something to do with that. Nevertheless, it’s time for Abbey to step out of the kitchen—and her comfort zone—and Bendrix has even handpicked a man for her to date.

Samuel Howard is everything Abbey’s dreamed of: handsome, successful, and looking to raise a family. But a creamy icing might be needed to hide a problem or two. When Samuel complains about disrespect for the institution of marriage, Abbey’s reminded of her nontraditional family, with thirteen children from various mothers. And when Samuel rails about kids having kids, Abbey thinks of her twenty-year-old sister who’s recently revealed her pregnancy.

Soon Abbey is facing one disaster after another and struggling to make sense of it all. Her search for love has led her down a bitter path, but with the help of her unique family and unwavering friends, she just might find the ooh la la that makes life sweet.

Review: The Life You Left by Carmel Harrington

The Life You Left by Carmel Harrington
Published: June 19, 2014
Publisher: HarperImpulse
Format: via NetGalley
Rating: 4/5

Synopsis
Sarah, I’m not coming home tonight.
If you love me, you will give me the space I need…
Tell the children I love them.
Paul

It started out like any other day for Sarah Lawler; getting the kids ready for school, making the pack lunches and juggling baby Ella’s feeds. There was no way of knowing that her husband, Paul, would leave for work that morning and simply not come home.

Now the questions are piling up quicker than the unpaid bills and, unable to answer her children’s questions about where their Daddy is, Sarah is getting desperate. But it turns out she isn’t quite as alone as she thought she was. When her beloved childhood friend, Edward, comes back into her life, Sarah thinks she’s finally been thrown a life line.

There’s just one problem with Edward: no one else can see him. Edward is an angel. And he has a message for Sarah that will change her life and the lives of others forever. For it is only in the most difficult of times that Sarah can discover how strong she truly is. Set in a small coastal village on the beautiful Irish coast, The Life You Left is a story of redemption and the strength of love.

My Thoughts
Talk about a read that pulls at the heart strings! This is an amazing read though it is about losing someone it is also about finding your inner strength and finding who you truly are. For me this book was all about the feels. While the story is wonderfully written I loved the emotions more than anything. It has heart and that is what I’ve been missing in a lot of books I’ve been reading lately.
Sarah is one of characters that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page. You can’t help but feel for her and her children. While Sarah could’ve easily been a sad and weak character she isn’t and I loved how she turned herself around and became strong when she really needed to be.

This is one of those books I will be telling everyone I can about, it’s simply that good. If you want to read a book that hits all the right notes look no further than this one, you won’t be disappoint at the least.
