“How are you doing?” I rubbed Harris’s arm, knowing the day had to be bittersweet for him. He didn’t desire to take over the store as his dad had originally planned so it almost came as a blessing when Randy was forced to sell due to his debts. Still, Harris had spent the better part of almost a year mentally preparing for the takeover that now wouldn’t happen.
“Okay. I’m not sure what tomorrow will bring, though. I came here to work almost every day for more than a decade. What am I supposed to do with myself?”
As much as I wanted to, I didn’t have an answer to his question. I had a better idea than anyone what it meant to feel lost, and only over the past month and a half had I finally found myself. I thought I ached for a music career again but as I spent more time on stage, backstage, and on the tour bus I realized my life belonged in Sycamore Bay. My cosmetology degree was being put to good use at Lila’s salon, and now with another stylist, Zoe, added to the payroll, business boomed. I made decent money in hourly and tips and my health didn’t suffer because of it. In fact, I couldn’t even recall the last time my endometriosis flared up.
“Give it time, Harris. You’ll figure all of that out.”
“Yeah, maybe.” He touched his hand to my chin and tipped my face so I stared into his chestnut eyes. Wiping a stray brown hair away from my face and tucking it behind my ear, he added, “but we have a wedding to plan. I don’t want to cut corners anywhere. You deserve your dream wedding.”
How did I get so lucky as to be with a man like Harris? “I’m marrying you. That is my dream.” It had been for years. I crushed on him through all of high school and once we shared a kiss I thought that was it. It wasn’t though, and we went our separate ways. We’d found each other again, and I planned never to let him go.
He pressed his lips to mine and for a moment I forgot we were at the store. My knees weakened and my heart rate increased. He did that to me every single time.
“I see you two are still together.”
We turned our heads and my throat dropped into my stomach when Mandy Glab stood in front of us, a half of a smile on her face. After six months in prison, I hadn’t expected her beauty to overwhelm me. Before being sent away on vandalism charges—of Malone Hardware nonetheless—I’d never seen her without makeup, always looking perfect with every outline of her lipstick and stroke of her eyeshadow. Today wasn’t any different. Her hair was longer now, and her skin was its natural tone, not the slightly bronzed look she borrowed from a bottle.
“What are you doing here?” Harris pulled me to him as if not doing so would cause me harm. “Part of your release is that you not step foot in this store—and it’s still Malone Hardware for another few hours—and you aren’t within five hundred yards of my father. Do I need to contact your parole officer?”
Barely out from behind bars and already she violated her parole. Mandy did whatever she wanted. That was a fact the entire community of Sycamore Bay knew.

“Chandra’s in the car.”

“She’s what?” 

“She’s in the car. She can’t go back to the hotel.”

Still threading her hook through the yarn, she added, “You better not tell me she’s staying here.”

“Fine. I won’t tell you since you just said it.”

She shook her head back and forth as her lips tightened. Her rock became more fierce, and I feared she’d come flying off the chair.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?”

“What can I say, Dory? You blatantly ignored my request—no, my demand—to keep this child out of my life.”

“She’s not a child, Grandma. She’s a grown woman. Don’t you think you can find a little empathy in your heart to give this woman a family?”

“What did you say to me? Dory—“

The doorbell rang interrupting her thought. I told Chandra to wait in the car. Maybe this was better. Now it forced Grandma to face the truth. That’s not the way I wanted to do it, but I couldn’t very well throw Chandra out on her butt or send her back to … wherever she came from. I needed to find out where that was.

Grandma threw her crocheting items onto the floor. “I am not happy with you, young lady. Go get the door. I’ll start a pot of coffee because Lord knows I’m going to need it.”

Devastating news from his sister certainly doesn’t help. At least he has the holidays to look forward to. When Landon shows up at the mall and Juliette prevents a disaster, he can’t stop thinking about that sweet elf. Juliette doesn’t believe in the spirit of Christmas, but she can’t help but wonder why Landon was in her line that day. Could Landon deserve one of those second chances she's so unwilling to give?

“Don’t be a Grinch!”

“Huh?” I lift my gaze and my best friend and co-worker Carly stands in the doorway, the smile so bright on her face it almost blinds me. “What do you mean don’t be a Grinch?”

“Oh, you know,” she says as she makes her way into the room, planting herself in my chair. “Like you are every holiday season.”

“I’m not a Grinch.” Maybe I am. I try my best not to show it. It’s possible I don’t have a convincing poker face. Poker was never my game, anyway. I’m more of a Solitaire kind of woman.

“You most certainly are. Every Christmas party you sulk at the table drinking gin and tonic and refuse to join in on anything. This year, you are in. You’ll be the life of the party.”

“Over my dead body.”

“Shit, Jules, your stiff body would be a better time than you are alive at these functions.”

She’s right, and I know it. Why is she always right? I want to take offense but it’s no secret I’m not Christmas’s biggest fan. I may be the only elf working at the mall that despises it. The elf job isn’t for me, though. I do it for others. That’s festive, isn’t it? Isn’t Christmas about giving? I do plenty of that.

“Leave me alone. And why are you so bubbly? Did you drink a bottle of bubble bath or something?” I grab the container of pens, staples, and paperclips out of the box and place them on the desk. This is much easier to deal with than the picture of my family with our fake smiles. I don’t know why I keep that picture anyway.

“Oh, I don’t know.”

She dots her face with her fingertips, moving them around from one side to the other. Why is she acting so weird? “Wait.” I stop when I see it. “Are you wearing an engagement ring?”

She squeals and pops out of the chair, rushing over to show me. Her hand misses smacking me in the face as she shows off her princess cut ring, sparkles and all. “Pretty.”

“Pretty? Are you kidding me right now, Jules? This ring is gorgeous and fit for the fairest princess in the land.”

“Which is you, I assume.”

“What crawled into your pants this morning? Or should I ask who didn’t? Another bad date, huh?”

I shrug, not in the mood to discuss my date with Romeo. No joke. My cousin Dana claimed she found the perfect guy for me, and I said yes to a blind date. His name was Romy, like Mira Sorvino in that movie Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. I’d only ever heard the name Romy from that movie. It turned out he used Romy as a nickname for Romeo. Yeah. Dana set me up with a Romeo because of course we’d be Romeo and Juliette. Barf. I don’t even spell my name like the Shakespearean character, and the last thing I would ever do is poison myself over a man. Dana had her fun. I did not. She’s never setting me up again.

“Let’s say I got home very early, watched an entire movie, and was asleep by ten.”

“Ouch. That is a bad date.”

Synopsis

Angie was a 90s girl with it all figured out, but after a disastrous marriage, she's not sure she knows how--or where--to find the right guy. A crash while roller skating lands her in the arms of Owen, a sweet and handsome forty-something widower. As the soundtrack of her high school years plays in the background, flirtation leads to what feels like a real connection. Can Angie trust her heart enough to move on and make a new soundtrack to her life?

My Thoughts

This is a VERY short read about 30 pages or so but it's super cute and lots and fun. Angie is getting over a divorce and one night while roller skating she bumps into Owen who is a widower and with that a whole night of talking might just lead into something that both weren’t looking for but might be what they both need. I loved the cute and flirty interaction between both of them and the chemistry was off the charts. This is definitely one quick read that has the feel of a full-fledged novel.
