My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this read! As a fan of Mary Kay Andrew’s books, I found this premise refreshing with the addition of a bit of mystery. The main character of Hattie is relatable with her dealing with trying to move on after her husband's death while dealing with her future as far as her romantic life goes.

Hattie’s love is restoring houses, it's the one thing that has helped her deal with her loss however when she is offered a chance to be on a TV show doing exactly that she is hesitant, to say the least. All she wanted to do was her job while the higher-ups want to focus more on pushing a romance between her co-star and herself. However, we see that sparks happen between Hattie and someone else, which I loved! While the romance was good I really felt the relationship between Hattie and her best friend was the real gem here. They have been there for each other through thick and thin and even today they have each other’s back.

While Hattie’s life and work is the main storyline I also enjoyed the second storyline of the mystery surrounding a missing teacher back in the day and how Hattie’s house flip is involved. 

All in all this book was funny and the storyline was a good one. The characters were all relatable and interesting plus the twist of the bit of mystery was a plus. Once again Mary Kay Andrews delivers a solid summer read I would recommend… hands down!

My Thoughts

In Sunset Beach the newest novel by Mary Kay Andrews we met Drue who is basically down on her luck and estranged from her father ever since her mother’s death. She is working at a bar to make ends meet but she soon reconnects with her father who offers her a job and gives her the house that belonged to her grandparents. As much as she doesn't want anything from him she does need a job so she accepts and as soon as she gets there she realizes he has remarried [again] to her ex-best friend from childhood.

Brice is a lawyer and takes up all kinds of lawsuits so when a woman comes in wanting more money from the death of her daughter Drue realizes that there is something there to check out. She feels like someone tried to cover up something and this poor woman deserves justice for her daughter so she makes it her mission to uncover the truth. In time Drue discovers not only this truth but also another that she will regret finding out. We get dual storylines in Sunset Beach, we also get a mystery of sorts that took place decades before and the players in this one hit closer to Drue than she ever expected.

I really enjoyed this novel I loved how we got two storylines and how they slowly came together in a nice way. The pace was perfect and you definitely got caught up in all the mystery that this book had to offer. I went into thinking this was a light fluffy beach read but this one had a lot of depth to it and as a fan of mystery, I really liked that she played this element to perfection here. This is one Summer read that will have you hooked from the very beginning and will leave you completely satisfied.

My Thoughts

As a blogger, I don’t review cookbooks that often but when one of my favorite authors writes one I make an exception! This new cookbook by MKA is a winner hands down!  What I love most is how simple and easy yet decadent these recipes are. I love how they are categorized by occasion everything from drinks to apps to holiday meals and they all seem doable for all the non-cooks out there. I definitely see myself trying quite a few of these over the next few months and I know my family will just love them! I highly advise everyone who wants to try their hand at cooking to start with this one because everything you will need is all in one book.

My Thoughts

As a regular reader of Mary Kay Andrews, I was so pleased with her latest novel The Weekenders. I must admit I loved this novel more than some of her recent ones because I felt this one was more like some of her past reads which I really enjoyed. I loved the whole feel of a fun beach read with the dash of mystery that plays out through the whole book.

We meet Riley who spends her summer in North Carolina with family and friends but from the start, this summer feels different she has been trying to reach her husband but can never find him and that sets off a chain of events that will change her life forever. What I really enjoyed was the whole interaction between all the summer friends. I found this read funny but I also liked that Mary Kay Andrews gave us this other storyline that evolves a bit of a mystery. It gave this beach read a little something extra to bite into and I loved it!

This is by far one of my favorite reads by Mary Kay Andrews in recent years. Though it was a bit on the long side for me it went by pretty fast. If you like your beach reads light and fun but if you also love a bit of a mystery this is the perfect read for you! So grab your sunscreen and a cool glass of iced tea and sit back and enjoy The Weekenders this is one read that demands to be on top of every summer list!

What Is a "Beach Read?”

Whether I’m on an actual beach, or just tucked into a chair in a sunny spot on my back porch, for me a beach read is a book that totally transports me—into a time and a place I didn’t even know I wanted to go. Sometimes I’m just looking for book candy—a story with relatable characters, interesting setting, and an irresistible love story. Some people call these chick lit or women’s fiction—but I just call books like that a good time.

A beach read should be one that keeps me turning the pages—that makes me forget who I’m with and where I am.

Sometimes that means a great suspense novel or thriller. I love a good mystery, but personally, I don’t want a book that leaves me too terrified to turn out the lights at night. In other words, keep me guessing, but don’t keep me scared! In that same vein, I find mysteries to be a great read, and especially love returning to series mysteries with continuing characters who feel like old friends. I never miss an installment of Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch series.

Not all beach reads have to be fiction. A great essayist like David Sedaris, Anna Quindlen or the late Nora Ephron can be a fun companion, and I also enjoy “armchair travel” books from writers like Peter Mayle and Frances Mayes. And summertime is also a perfect time to sink my teeth into a juicy celebrity tell-all—like Lee Server’s excellent biography of Ava Gardner—Love is Nothing, or Yes, Please, Amy Poehler’s endearing autobiography.

My idea of a great beach read isn’t a downer or one that leaves me curled up in a fetal position, wondering about the meaning of life. Sunny weather means I want a book with an equally sunny disposition. I’ll save the heavy literary lifting for another season. I mean that literally too, so unless the story is amazingly riveting, I don’t want a 1,000-plus page tome weighing down my beach bag.

Are you looking for the perfect “beach read” this summer? I humbly suggest my latest novel, BEACH TOWN

Synopsis

Greer Hennessy is a struggling movie location scout. Her last location shoot ended in disaster when a film crew destroyed property on an avocado grove. And Greer ended up with the blame. Now Greer has been given one more chance—a shot at finding the perfect undiscovered beach town for a big budget movie. She zeroes in on a sleepy Florida panhandle town. There’s one motel, a marina, a long stretch of pristine beach and an old fishing pier with a community casino—which will be perfect for the film’s climax—when the bad guys blow it up in an all-out assault on the townspeople.

Greer slips into town and is ecstatic to find the last unspoilt patch of the Florida gulf coast. She takes a room at the only motel in town, and starts working her charm. However, she finds a formidable obstacle in the town mayor, Eben Thinadeaux. Eben is a born-again environmentalist who’s seen huge damage done to the town by a huge paper company. The bay has only recently been re-born, a fishing industry has sprung up, and Eben has no intention of letting anybody screw with his town again. The only problem is that he finds Greer way too attractive for his own good, and knows that her motivation is in direct conflict with his.  Will true love find a foothold in this small beach town before it’s too late and disaster strikes?

My Thoughts

First off I’m a huge Mary Kay Andrews fan, I love her books and they make the perfect reads, Beach Town is no expection this one focuses on Greer who is a sent to Florida to look for locations for a new movie. This is her chance to rebuild her reputation after her last film shoot was set on fire and it was seen as her fault. She is determined to make this her comeback film but little does she know her future is headed in a whole other direction.

While in town she meets a cast of characters who will change her life...for the better. She becomes close to the locals and forges friendships with the owner of the hotel, her niece and Eb who is the mayor and owns just about everything in town. She soon finds herself butting heads with him and you know what that means right? Yep love will soon blossom.

While I’m a sucker for a good love story what I enjoyed most was Greer’s personal story. Her mother has recently passed away and all she has left of her family is her grandmother. Her father left when she was five and hasn't been around since. All her life she was lead to believe he abandoned her and her mother but when she finally decides to meet her father again she is told a different story. Her world is set upside down when she finds out the true story of her childhood and surprisingly to even herself she decides she does want a relationship with her father.

Although this book’s main focus is a movie and all the on goings that happen to make it I loved the story of Greer and her basically coming to terms with her past and finding what she truly wants in her future. This is indeed the perfect beach read to have around on these upcoming hot summer days.

My Thoughts

Christmas Bliss is a novel about two best friends, Weezie and BeBe and their troubled lives that are happening weeks leading up to Christmas.

Weezie is set to marry the love of her life on Christmas Day but first she must try and organize her life and keep her family and friends all happy at the same time. Her fiancé is a chef who has been offered a dream job in NYC but Weezie is forced to decide between glamorous New York, and her small hometown which she adores. Not to mention she has to deal with her mother who isn’t ready to face the reality of her fathers on-setting dementia.

BeBe on the other hand is very pregnant living with her boyfriend but refuses to marry again after several bad marriages. One day her world is rocked when she finds out that her divorce from her first marriage never happen, that her ex never signed the papers! The last she knew he was in prison and hasn’t heard from him since. She is forced to go back and come face to face with her past if she ever hopes to have a real future with the man she now loves.

Christmas Bliss is the fourth book in Mary Kay Andrews Blue series. I must admit I never read the others but now that I’ve read this one I can’t wait to dive into the others. No worries! If you haven’t read the others either don’t let this stop you from checking this novel out. It truly reads like a stand-alone. I’ve become a huge fan of Mary Kay Andrews her books are wonderfully written and will make you laugh out loud.
