I spin around to resume my spot in line—it still hasn’t moved—when the doors to the building main entrance open with a bang. “Hurry up, man. I don’t have all fucking day to do this!” I flinch at the harsh tone from the man passing me in the hall. He pops his neck, revealing the edge of a tattoo from under the oversized white T-shirt that clearly hides his ass since his jeans are failing to do their job. He must see my movement out of the corner of his eye because he lowers his cell from his ear. He pins me with a glare, his eyes narrowing to the smallest slits I’ve ever seen. They look black, cold, full of warning and familiar. More than familiar, actually. They belong to Clint Grover. He used to run around with my sister’s ex, Drew, very briefly before he wound up in jail. He must be out now. “What the fuck are you looking at?” he snaps, continuing on his way. I glance to the floor, not giving him the satisfaction of a response. He clearly doesn’t recognize me. I want to keep it that way. “Hold up a sec, man,” he says, and my focus on the carpet in front of me is filled with a pair of worn-out Nikes. “Charlie Campbell?” Shit. I shake my head but don’t look up. My hands are shaking like I’m holding one of those damn work-out shake it things. I take a slow breath, hoping he doesn’t notice. “I know it’s you. Look up.” I don’t. I move to step around him, but he sidesteps to stay in front of me. “I said: Look. Up.” With a heart beating so fast you’d think I drank twenty Red Bulls this morning, I meet his gaze. I can do this. “I knew it. Well, well, well, this is fun.” The smell of a skunk fills my nostrils, and I swallow in a breath not to throw up. “What do you want, Clint?” I ask. “Ah, so you even recognize me. It isn’t the tattoos, is it?” With a face, I know holds no expression, I don’t answer him. I just want to get out of here. Far away from him. “The boys know you’re back?” he asks, clicking his tongue against his teeth when I don’t answer. I sigh. If I just talk to him, this will be over quicker. “No. A little hard to spread the news when they’re in jail,” I say. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.” Again, I move to step around him the other way, and again, he steps in front of me. “What? You’re not happy to see me?” I hold my head up but continue to refuse looking at him. Be strong. “If you’re not going to tell me what you want, then please, step aside.” “Damn, you’re a lot more feisty than I remember. I think I like it.” He starts to step toward me, but I say, “Are you going to move or not?” My heart is pounding and my hands are shaking. I can’t decide if I want to scream or cry. His head tilts slowly and his eyes never leave mine. Finally, he steps aside. “I hope to see you soon,” he calls out behind me as I’m basically sprinting down the hallway. I don’t stop to get back in line. I don’t stop till I’m out the doors and in my car with every door locked. Holy shit.

Abby
I jump down and grab my knife, but as but as I pull back in what should be the segue into my quick getaway run—dramatic, smooth, commanding, just like in the movies—I’m jerked back. Shit. Shit. Shit. The knife is stuck. “Abby, let’s go!” Beth snaps at me. She’s crouched behind the truck where they can’t see her. “I cannot believe that I trusted that you were going to break up with him like a normal person. Let’s go.” “I’m trying,” I shush back, jerking again on the damn knife. “Just leave it.” “It has my initials on it.” A gift from my mom for my eighteenth birthday. She knows me so well. Not. “What the … seriously?” Beth moves around to the tire and pushes me out of the way. I duck when Jace’s ball cap comes into view over the back of the truck. Then, Beth and I yank on the knife together. Nothing happens. “Let me drive!” Tyler shouts. “Dude, what the fuck is your deal? It’s my truck. I’ll drive.” “But I’m thinking of getting one just like it, and I need to test drive something.” Tyler’s response is quick. “Dude, whatever,” Jace replies as I see the keys flying through the air, right before Tyler comes into view. “What the fuck are you doing, Abby?” he says through the side of his lips. I barely see his mouth move. “Trying to leave. What does it look like?” I whisper frantically. “Whoops!” Tyler drops the keys. He kneels in front of the tire and jerks the knife out in one swift move. Damn. His white T-shirt hugs his bicep, and, oh boy, he looks good tonight. I mean, he’s always had the whole Liam Hemsworth thing going on, but tonight he looks even hotter than a movie star. His hair is the perfect dirty blonde and his eyes are brightest green I’ve ever seen. Don’t even get me started on his smile. Shoot, any girl would agree to whatever he wanted just to see it one more time. I would know. I’ve been that girl. Tyler gives the knife to me and mouths “run.” We don’t hesitate in the slightest. I tuck the knife into my back pocket as I duck to run. The tire is successfully slashed, and I’m not leaving any evidence of my crime at the scene. Hunching behind her car, Beth shoots daggers from her eyes as she stares at me. The look is so intense, I need something else to focus on. Yes, this crack on the sidewalk is a nice distraction. “I can’t believe you,” she seethes. “It’s fine. No one saw us but Tyler,” I say just as Jace begins shouting a string of curses. Jackass. “I should have known you were going to do something crazy tonight. You made breaking up sound so simple,” Beth adds. I shrug and then we both hunker down tighter when the lights of Tyler’s truck flash our way. I crawl around the front of the car and watch them turn the corner. Then, I start to laugh. Beth is still glaring at me. Only now she’s standing with her hands on her hips and looking at me like my mom would when I’d come home past curfew, before she decided she didn’t want anything to do with me. The whole picture makes me laugh even harder. Slowly, Beth’s lips begin to tug into a smile. “You are out of control,” she says and unlocks her car. “There is nothing wrong with that,” I tell her.

About JUST ONE NIGHT

Sara and Logan have always known their relationship was different because they were never very good at the “just friends” thing. They’re finally ready to embrace a deeper side—but are they ready for big-time problems? Sara Connelly has a drive for success. She hasn’t made time for men because the way she sees it, a career she can control but a relationship she can’t. Just one night was all it took to send her running on a trip to collect her thoughts and re-group back to her career-focused life. But when she comes home, she quickly learns there might be more important things in life than owning her own business, and that’s Logan Parker. Logan Parker coasts through life day by day, and as long as Sara is a part of that life, he’s happy. One night has left Logan with the impression that more than friends is an option. But when Sara leaves without an explanation, he vows to show her how important she is to him. When an opportunity gives him the chance to be someone he thinks Sara would be proud of, he doesn’t pass on the offer. Her moving across state lines, however, wasn’t in his plans. Living in two states is going to be hard. Holding a long-distance relationship is going to be harder. They’ve made it this far, but can they make it work or will distance finally tear them apart?

“What kind of person does it make me that I want to go to Colorado to open this new bar, but I also want you to stay here and take the opportunity my dad is giving you?” Logan licks his lips as his head nods. “I’d say that makes you human, strong, and smart for knowing what you want in life.” A small smile tugs at my lips. “But it also means that I’m a horrible girlfriend and I haven’t even had that title for twenty-four hours.” “Don’t even think that. I think it’s great we aren’t letting this get in the way of success. You will do your thing there, I’ll do mine here, and we can make it work until you get back.” “Yeah, but this was supposed to be it, the perfect time for us to be a couple. Now it’s the exact opposite. We may as well wait until I get back before we give this a real shot,” I say. I’m already using the bar as an excuse because I’m scared, but I don’t want to admit it. He shakes his head no. “You know what, we can do this. We can handle distance. Look at everything we’ve been through. Rockland, Colorado, is what—three hours from here? I’ll come down every weekend if I have to. I’ll do anything and everything if it means seeing you.”

“Well, I’ll be damned, Kelsey Brian showed up to work before me. Now I’ve seen it all.” Logan struts into the bar like he owns the place and lets out a low whistle. “To what do we owe the pleasure?” I roll my eyes, but Sara just stands there with a silly smile on her face. Logan has one of those personalities that you can’t help but love. Just the tone of his voice and his own smile can improve a girl’s mood in less than a second. Not to mention his shaggy, dark blonde hair, blue eyes, and athletic build. He would be a catch in more ways than one. I think Sara is finally figuring it out. “It’s not what, it’s who,” Sara coos. Warmth creeps up my neck and into my cheeks. Logan’s eyes go wide. “Dude, are you serious? Someone has finally cracked the ‘I hate boys’ phase we thought would last forever.” “It’s not a phase,” I interrupt. “I just find it hard to trust someone now.” Sara’s face lights up as she slowly nods her head up and down. “And stop calling us dudes.” She laughs, pointing at Logan. “Wait a minute…does this have anything to do with Ethan?” Logan suggests, folding his arms in front of him. “Oh, I bet it does,” Sarah says. Logan reaches his arm over the counter, his palm flat, and Sara gives him a high five. It’s like I’m not even here. How does Logan know about Ethan anyway? I just found out yesterday. “He called me this morning, wanted to get together but something came up, said he needed a rain check.” Logan shares this piece of information as he joins us behind the bar. I continue with my side work and listen to them at the same time. “Yeah, well, it better be for something good because he said he was going to be late.” He probably went to change his shirt, but I’d be okay with him not changing his shirt and just forgetting about it altogether. “Hello? Earth to Kelsey!” I look up from—wait. Was I just staring at the sink water this whole time? “What’s your deal?” Sara asks. “She knows something,” Logan answers. They both study me with their full attention. I crack under the pressure. It only took two seconds, but it’s always hard to keep things from Sara. Then you add Logan, and there’s no hope. They make a strong team. “Alright, so I may have seen Ethan once or twice since yesterday.” That sounds good enough. I turn with the intention of filling the sink at the other end of the bar, but Sara grabs my arm. I keep my eyes pinned to the floor. “And…?” “And…I might know why he’s late?” “Is that a question?” My face wrinkles up. I want to avoid this whole conversation. Treat it just like a Band-Aid, Kelsey. One quick pull and it’s over. “I may have kicked him in the face, given him black eyes, hit him with my car door, and burned him with coffee right before I got here.” I shrug. “Hence no coffee.”
