Late to the Game [7]: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Late to the Game is a series I do featuring books that everybody and their mama have read…except me. The thing is 99% of the time I have these books but they have just been pushed back on my TBR pile. This won’t be a review of sorts seeing how everyone already knows the basics of the story but more of what I felt and how it affected me. I’ve dedicated this feature to try to put a dent in my pile and also to see if they live up to the hype…good and/or bad.

Synopsis
A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people’s lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

My Thoughts
What took me so long to read this?? I’ll admit I got this during the whole hype of it all but I didn’t want to just jump on the bandwagon so I took my time and finally I’m realizing what it was all about. This is the story of Rachel and how she is trying to get her life back together after her marriage broke up all while trying over and over again to stop drinking. We see her every day as she takes the train to work and soon she becomes obsessed in a sense with a couple she sees at home while she passes them every day. We find out that this couple lives mere houses from her old home and her old life. Rachel soon comes involved in a series of events that will make her challenge everything and everyone that she thought she knew. She soon questions herself and the actions that have brought her to where she is now.
This is one story that has twists and turns and made me think that anything is possible. Just when you thought you had it figured out you are thrown for a loop and the impossible happens. Not to mention your feelings for every character constantly is changing as the story evolves and the storyline is drawn to a close. If you haven’t read this wonderfully written story please do it’s the perfect blend of mystery and fiction and the ending is…simply…WOW.

  1. Yes, I was very frustrated with Rachel while I was reading this one. Her self-destructive attitude and all the drinking. However, I liked her better later on and have actually thought about going back and rereading this book or listening on audio. Glad you enjoyed it!
