Synopsis
What if the life you wanted, and the woman you fell in love with, belonged to someone else?
Chris and Claire Canton’s marriage is on life support. Downsized during the recession and out of work for a year, Chris copes by retreating to a dark place where no one can reach him, not even Claire. When he’s offered a position that will keep him away from home four nights a week, he dismisses Claire’s concern that time apart could be the one thing their fragile union can’t weather. Their suburban life may look idyllic on the outside, but Claire has never felt so disconnected from Chris, or so lonely.

Local police officer Daniel Rush used to have it all, but now he goes home to an empty house every night. He pulls Claire over during a routine traffic stop, and they run into each other again at the 4th of July parade. When Claire is hired to do some graphic design work for the police department, her friendship with Daniel grows, and soon they’re spending hours together.

Claire loves the way Daniel makes her feel, and the way his face lights up when she walks into the room. Daniel knows that Claire’s marital status means their relationship will never be anything other than platonic. But it doesn’t take long before Claire and Daniel are in way over their heads, and skating close to the line that Claire has sworn she’ll never cross.

My Thoughts
I read this right after I had just finished Garvis-Graves previous novel On the Island. I was a little apprehensive to do so since I was so in awe of her last work. I went into this with a clear mind and trying not to compare the two.

I was pleasantly surprised that I had no need to worry. This book is just as great! I enjoyed the story of Claire and all that is happening in her life. I really liked how the story was told in alternating prospects, those of the three main characters, Claire, her husband Chris and Daniel. While I personally don’t just see this as a story of an “almost” affair it does bring up the question. What is actually considered an affair? Is it just physical or is emotionally allowing yourself to open up to someone else just as bad? I saw this as more of failure to communicate with your loved one as the real culprit. The lack of communication is what drove Claire and Chris apart. In other stories I’ve only seen one side, that’s why I liked how the author let us to see what the other person was feeling and thinking.

Although I liked all the characters ,I kind of saw Daniel was just a pawn in helping Claire and Chris deal with their problems. Don’t get me wrong I liked his backstory and I would kind of like to see it explored more….maybe into its own book…HINT HINT! But I just didn’t see him as a real threat to Claire. Maybe it wasn’t so much him but Claire’s devotion to her family.

Overall I enjoyed this novel. It’s a fast paced book with a great cast of supporting characters. The neighbors and the drama that ensues throughout the block reads very true to life. It just shows you that everything just isn’t what it seems. Life isn’t all white picket fences it has its ups and downs but we have to fight for what we love no matter what. Like they say the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Review: New Money by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal

New Money by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal
Published: September 10, 2013
Format: Finished copy via publisher
Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books
Rating: 3.5/5

Synopsis
A young Southern woman of modest means suddenly finds herself thrust into New York's high society when she discovers that she is the illegitimate daughter of a recently-deceased billionaire.

Savannah Morgan had high hopes. She dreamed of becoming a writer and escaping her South Carolina town, where snooty debutantes have always looked down on her. But at twenty-four, she's become a frustrated ex-cheerleader who lives with her mother and wonders if rejecting a marriage proposal was a terrible mistake. Then Savannah's world is shaken when she learns the father she never knew is Edward Stone, a billionaire media mogul who has left Savannah his fortune on the condition that she move to Manhattan and work at his global news corporation. Putting aside her mother's disapproval, Savannah dives head first into a life of wealth and luxury that is threatened by Edward's other children--the infuriatingly arrogant Ned and his sharp-tongued sister, Caroline, whose joint mission is to get rid of Savannah. She deals with their treachery along with her complicated love life, and she eventually has to decide between Jack, a smooth and charming real estate executive, and Alex, a handsome aspiring writer/actor. Savannah must navigate a thrilling but dangerous city while trying to figure out what kind of man her father truly was.

New Money is a keenly observed, exciting peek into a world of privilege and glamour with a spirited and charming heroine at its center.

My Thoughts
I read this as my final summer read if you will and I was pleasantly surprised. Savannah is a southern girl who is at the time just trying to find her way in life. She's had a string of meaningless jobs and is trying to make her dreams come true as a writer in her small town. I enjoyed her tale as the girl who's never gave up and wanted more than what her life was about. I loved how Lorraine Zago Rosenthal writes her with a little fire in her bones. True to southern woman we stand up for what we believe in and yes at times don’t know when to shut our mouths. [Ha!]

The only reason I think I gave it a 3.5 was because I think some of characters were a bit of a cliché. Granted I know some rich people think they are better than others, I still think we’ve seen this story written that way many times. I wished I could’ve read more of the story between Savannah and her siblings. I just felt the end was a rushed, like it all wrapped up all to quickly.

Over all I did enjoy this novel, enough to recommend it without a doubt. Definitely a quick summer read with a story that will keep you interested.

Release Day Spotlight: Review and Giveway for Tempted in the Tropics by Tracy March

Tempted in the Tropics by Tracy March
Publication: September 9, 2013
Entangled Bliss
Rating 4/5

About the book:
The only thing they agree on is the sultry heat between them. Nothing’s more important to Paige Ellerbee than her struggling bakery, Sweet Bee’s. When Lane Anderson, the temporary new doctor hot enough to rival McDreamy, moves in next door, though, she’s sure things are looking up. Until he threatens her business in their first conversation.

Lane just wants to practice medicine responsibly—not argue with the flighty bakery owner next door. But when he finds himself traveling down to the Caribbean to play guitar for Paige’s best friend’s wedding, suddenly the sight of the blonde in a bikini eclipses the fact they can’t agree on anything. And as their vacation romance grows, his reservations about starting something after getting burned by love are washed away like sand on the beach.

But once Paige and Lane land back home, will these polar opposites be able to forgive their feud and find lasting love?
My Thoughts
A very cute short novella all about second chances and trusting in love again. Paige is a single baker who has returned home to care for her father after the death of her mother. While back in her small hometown where her choice of suitors is slim pickings at best, she sees potential in new doctor next door.
At first Paige and Lane don't quite hit it off, it takes a little match making from friends and a few of her neighbors. The romance takes off after they are both ask to attend a wedding of a mutual friend. Flirtation takes over and both agree to go with it and have fun while on this tropical vacation.
After awhile both realize that they both know and what this to be more than just a fling. However will Lane's secrets destroy their happiness or will Paige accept him faults and all?
I thought this was a fun and great read to end my summer. It has all you want...a great love story, magical tropical backdrop and seeing if you can believe in love again after you've been hurt.
Great characters and writing, you cant go wrong with this read.

Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Expected Publication: September 10, 2013
Format: finished copy provided by publisher
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Rating: 5/5
Add to Goodreads

Synopsis:
A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love. Cath is a Simon Snow fan.
Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, and dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?
And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

My Thoughts
I’ve been waiting for this ever since I put down Eleanor and Park. Needless to say I wasn’t disappointed at all. I’d like to do this review a little if I may this time. I’d like to start this off as a sort of short open letter to Rainbow Rowell.

Dear Rainbow Rowell,
You are one of those rare and amazing people who were born to write. You have written such funny and amazing characters that I just can’t put into words how I feel about them. So I’ll simply say… THANK YOU! Thank you for writing characters that stay with me until way after I turned the last page. You’ve made me realize again how fun and exciting reading can be. Most importantly you made me remember how it feels to fall in love with characters once again. It’s good to read a book[s] that doesn’t have to reply on gimmicks, vampires or other crazy worldly things to tell a story. You’ve shown me that great stories can come from everyday people those are the truest heroes for me. Through your writing I remember how first love can be, the butterflies, stealing looks, hand holding and the magic of a first kiss. All the things that makes the teenage years crazy yet wonderful all at the same time.
So once again thanks! I can’t wait until you bless us with yet another wonderful story.
*Rainbow…you’re so on my auto buying list now!
-Monica

Ok now that I’ve done that…I don’t think I can review this without spoiling it at some level…so I won’t. I will only say this…PLEASE BUY AND READ IT! You won’t regret it. Once again it gives you characters to root for and of course those you will fall in love with. I’ll leave you with this… it gives me two new characters I adore.
[1] Levi- I can’t help to smile when I read he is smiling. Sigh!
[2] Reagan- I can totally identify with this smartass roommate. I so maybe dating myself here but is it just me or do I sense a bit of Megan from Felicity?? Haha! Oh if ya’ll don’t know what is check it out. It’s one of top YA type TV shows of all times, besides My So Called Life and Dawson’s Creek. However that’s another topic for a future blog.
